Value sets are collections of codes that represent clinical and/or administrative concepts. They serve many purposes in health information technology settings including quality measurement, clinical decision support, analytics, rules-based logical reasoning, and other use cases. The success of these initiatives can be limited by the implementation of value sets with shortcomings in accuracy and/or usability. Our study objective was to compare the quality of value sets between Element Set Foundation with roughly equivalent value sets from VSAC. The focus was not to directly compare the actual expansion terms but rather to assess the value sets from each source against the dimensions of the 6 Cs Framework.
