Powering Pharmacogenomics: Clinical Architecture’s Role in Advancing Personalized Medicine in the NHS

The PROGRESS study is transforming how medications are prescribed in the NHS by integrating pharmacogenomics into routine care. By using genetic insights to tailor drug therapies, this initiative helps reduce adverse drug reactions, optimize treatment effectiveness, and improve patient safety.

As part of this collaborative effort, Clinical Architecture is contributing its expertise in healthcare terminology management and interoperability to ensure that pharmacogenomic data is structured, standardized, and seamlessly integrated into NHS clinical workflows. Supporting PROGRESS Phase II with Industry Partners

A key advancement in this phase is ProgressRx, a digital tool that integrates genomic test results directly into clinical decision support (CDS) systems. The success of this initiative relies on collaboration between key healthcare technology providers, including:

  • Clinical Architecture, which ensures pharmacogenomic data is accurate, structured, and easily integrated into NHS systems. By improving terminology management and interoperability, we help deliver clear, actionable insights to support prescribers.
  • First Databank, whose OptimiseRx platform integrates pharmacogenomic recommendations into NHS prescribing systems like EMIS and SystmOne, providing real-time, patient-specific clinical decision support in primary care.
  • The Phoenix Partnership, which facilitates secure sharing of patient records via its SystmOne platform, ensuring that pharmacogenomic insights are accessible across different NHS care settings.

By working together to bridge the gap between pharmacogenomics and routine prescribing, these partnerships are helping to make precision medicine a reality across England.
